Real-World Connection A connection between the real-world and the classroom is important to the learning process. As a teacher of World Cultures, I must say that I was particularly moved by the opening ceremony of the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janiero, Brazil. To see many athletes from countries that are just a spec on a world map and to witness the similarities and differences in our cultures reminds me of why I enjoy guiding your learning about the fascinating cultures in this world and our connection to each other.
A special team will compete in the Olympic games - the Refugee Olympic Team. While they appreciate your support and applause, we must think of how we can help the home countries of these brave athletes.
We must also give a shot out to the Paralympics Games that will take place in Rio. The Paralympic athletes have a range of physical disabilities. However, their disabilities do not hinder them from being fierce competitors and champion athletes.
This is the first time the Summer Olympics and Paralympics have taken place on the continent of South America.
